Europe completed its second sector of the ITER Vacuum Vessel

A key milestone for the revolutionary project that involves Ansaldo Nucleare

The AMW consortium (Ansaldo Nucleare, Westinghouse, and Walter Tosto), in cooperation with Fusion for Energy, has completed the second European sector of the Vacuum Vessel for ITER, the world’s largest fusion experiment.

A ceremony in Ortona a Mare, Abruzzo, celebrated this milestone, highlighting international collaboration, advanced technology, and engineering excellence.

Roberto Adinolfi, President of Ansaldo Nucleare, stated: “The completion of the second EU sector of the Vacuum Vessel by the AMW Consortium confirms the ability of the European supply chain to combine strengths and capabilities existing in our individual companies to deliver high quality complex components, at them forefront of nuclear technologies”.

The Vacuum Vessel, a massive double-walled container, will house the fusion reaction, ensuring a clean environment. Europe is responsible for five of the nine sectors, with Korea producing the rest. Each sector requires extensive machining and welding, adhering to strict nuclear safety standards.

The second European sector will be shipped from Italy to France in March, with the remaining three sectors in production for delivery within two years.
